Who else likes listening to windchimes on the patio on a summer evening? This month we’re featuring a windchime project made by customer Craig Gadzinski who used 6061 aluminum tubes to create this musical work of art:

DID YOU KNOW…?
…that scientists recently made a breakthrough in streamlining steel alloy production?

Normally, alloy production has 3 main steps:
Extract metal(s) from ore
Mix liquid metals at the correct ratio
Apply thermomechanical treatments to give the alloy the desired properties
All of these steps are energy-intensive, resulting in high CO2 emissions and high energy costs. Now, however, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials have discovered that not only can these three steps be combined into one, but also that by adding specific metal oxides as catalysts, the single-step process can be dramatically sped up, saving both time and money.
In their experiments, they used a nickel oxide catalyst to create the master alloy used for making, among other things, 304 and 316 stainless steel. Doing this made the reaction twice as fast. The researchers are now investigating how other oxides might be used in a similar way.
