C1045 TG&P

1045 Turned, Ground and Polished Precision Shafting - C1045 TG&P is a silicon killed medium carbon steel. Higher carbon content imparts increased strength over low carbon steels, such as 1018. Turned, Ground and Polished Shafting is produced by turning instead of cold drawing the stock down to it’s nominal size. Since the internal stresses set up in the cold drawing process is avoided, the possibility of warpage and distortion is minimized. Grinding and polishing provides a finished size of greater accuracy and surface smoothness. Turned, Ground and Polished Precision Shafting represents the highest degree of over-all accuracy, concentricity, straightness, and surface perfection attainable in commercial practice. Turned, Ground and polished Precision Shafting is normally produced undersize of nominal, which lends favorably to fit standard bearings. Response to heat treatment is excellent and the resultant mechanical properties which can be obtained permit wide usage in the production of machinery parts and shafts. 1045 can be hammer forged, machinability is good, but forming and welding qualities are limited.

ANALYSIS

1045 TG&P conforms to ASTM A108

APPLICATIONS

1045 Turned, Ground and Polished Precision Shafting is used over 1045 cold roll or hot roll when higher dimensional accuracy and straightness in the production of shafts are required. This high degree of straightness is so important in high-speed shafting applications, as it serves to prevent vibration and wear on packings and bearings. 1045 TG&P is used crankshafts, high-speed motor shafts, axle shafts, pup shafts, etc. 1045 can be used where greater strength is required than can be obtained from the lower carbon steels. It responds to heat treatment, and a wide range of properties can be obtained

MACHINEABILITY AND WELDABILITY

Machinability is rated at 64% of B1112. Average cutting speed 95-120 ft/min. 1045 is not readily welded, due to its higher carbon content. On thin sections, arc or gas welding can be used without preheating, but in welds and joints on thicker sections, preheating is necessary. Stress relieving after welding is also recommended.

HEAT TREATING

1045 is a water or oil quenched metal. The recommended quenching temperatures are 1550°F for water and 1575°F for oil. A wide range of mechanical properties can be obtained by tempering at different temperatured between 700°F. and 1300°F. Tempering below 700°F should be avoided. 1045 can be flame or induction hardened, but not recommended for carburizing or cyaniding treatments.
